burlesque-new1As a big fan of Miss Saigon and having seen the new production four times I had an inkling this might be an event that would tick all the boxes. I wasn’t disappointed and in fact it exceeded my very high expectations. This wonderfully intimate venue with Cabaret style seating welcomed a mixed audience of family, friends and colleagues to the Miss Saigon star’s concert to promote his newly released solo album.

Opening with the powerful ‘Heaven on their minds’ from the classic rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Maynard set his cards on the table form the onset, showcasing his rich vocals and wonderfully engaging manner. Obviously very comfortable with the audience, Maynard’s comportment was no less than you would expect from a experienced and extremely talented singer. Highlights included the Seal hit song ‘Kiss from a Rose’ and the fabulously gravelly ‘When a man loves a woman’.

Maynard was joined onstage by a plethora of exquisite backing vocalists, all from the cast of Miss Saigon and then by award winners Kwang Ho Hong and Rachelle Ann Go both duetting with the star before giving extremely memorable solo performances. Hong, delivered a near perfect version of ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables and Go’s performance of the other Les Mis standard ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ was just beautiful. In both cases the highly exuberant audience were reduced to pin drop silence.

The Album was released on the same day and on the merits of this brilliant evening of entertainment will be a great success.
