Broadway actress Kim Maresca talks about bringing RUTHLESS! to the London stage
RUTHLESS! The Musical is making its West End debut at The Arts Theatre, playing until June 23rd 2018. The Off Broadway hit comes off the back of much acclaim with lead actress Kim Maresca.
The musical tells the story of beautiful and talented eight-year-old Tina Denmark, who will do anything to play the lead in her school play. Judy Demark, will be played by Kim Maresca and we caught up with her for a chat about the show!
You are currently starring in the UK production of Ruthless! The Musical at London’s Arts Theatre. For those who may not have seen it, what is it about and what role do you play?
I play Judy Denmark, a suburban housewife and I am mother to Tina, a very ambitious little girl who wants more than anything to be a star. Ruthless tells the story of when Tina goes extremely far to get what she wants. It’s illegal what she does and that’s all that I will say!
You also played the part in the New York production of the show. How have you found the audiences to be in London and are you getting a different reaction to the one in New York?
The audiences here are absolutely amazing, on their feet every night, clapping, laughing with us – giving a lot of love. We got the same in NY but it feels like there is more of a response here which is surprising as its written by US playwrights and set in US but we haven’t changed anything – its translated really well. There is a real mix of people in the audience too which is fun.
You can speak French fluently – if they did a French production of Ruthless! would you like to be in it?
Oui Oui! I would be there so fast it would be scary. I am not sure how they would name it though – le narcissist maybe? Lol I am not sure it would translate very well though!
Have you had a chance to see many shows since you have been in London? What are you dying to see?
Yes Les Mis which is my favourite show in the world. I’ve seen it 9 times now over the world. Girl From North Country, Pinocchio at the National which was beautiful, Chess, Everyone’s talking about Jamie, The Mousetrap which is a right of passage isn’t it! I am dying to see Tina, Bat Out of Hell as I’ve met some of the cast – really curious to see it and Strictly Ballroom and also my friend Summer Strallen in Young Frankenstein and my friend Antony Hewitt who understudies Aladdin – I want to see him.
If you could be the opposite sex for the day, what musical theatre role would you like to have a go at playing?
Val Jean in Les Mis – without a doubt. My dream role! I love the music, I love the story and its set in France. My fav Val Jean is Ivan Rutherford who I saw in the US and then gave me voice lessons. Was such an honor and he is now a friend. Number 2 would be Judas in JCS!
Why do you think people should come and see Ruthless! The Musical?
We only have a few performances left in London and the show is so funny and the cast are incredible. I am so lucky to be playing with these amazing actors. Once its gone I think people will be gutted they’ve missed it!
Thanks for having Tea With Wilma
