INTERVIEW: Newton Faulkner talks about Green Day musical AMERICAN IDIOT
You’ve had huge success in the musical charts over the years, notably with your single Dream Catch Me in 2007. Who have been some of your musical influences over the years and what are you listening to right now?
There’s always amazing music being made, at the moment, Laura Mvula’s doing great stuff. In terms of influences over the years, everything from Midlake and John Grant to Justin Bieber and the Japanese producer Cornelius, it’s an almost endless list now.
For those who may not be familiar with American Idiot, can you tell me what the show is about and the character that you play?
The show follows the path three friends, Will, Tunny and Johnny who I play. It’s about how they deal with everything that comes with living in post 9/11 America, and the switch from feeling invulnerable and trusting to suddenly vulnerable and untrusting. It’s definitely darker than your average musical.
I read that the first band you were ever in was a Green Day cover band. Have you always been a fan of their work and how does it feel to now be performing in a musical featuring their songs?
Yea, I’ve been a fan since I was about his thirteen years old so it’s amazing to get the opportunity to work with their material.
There are lots of exciting shows coming to London in 2016. Is there anything you are particularly looking forward to seeing?
Ground Hog Day, Tim Minchin’s new musical which after Matilda has huge potential.
Are there any other theatre roles that you would like to have a go at playing in the future?
There are some great roles out there but it would be really fun next to do a straight acting part maybe for a new original play.
If you could be the opposite sex for the day, what theatre role would you love to have a go at playing?
Nancy in Oliver’s got some balls.
Why do you think people should come to see American Idiot at the Arts Theatre?
The audience reaction to the show, every night, completely blow me away on the tour. People really love it, it took by surprise quite how much people love it!
Thanks for having Tea With Wilma
