Kerry Ellis TWW3

Kerry Ellis one of the West Ends leading ladies, having starred in pretty much everything! We Will Rock You, Wicked (both London and Broadway), My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables (to name but a few). Kerry is in the middle of writing a new album, preparing for a UK tour with Brian May and about to tour the UK again in the concert version of Rent!  Somewhere in the middle of it all, she has even managed to sit down with me for a quick cuppa and a chat about it all!

This is the third time we have had tea together! For those who may not know though, can you tell me about yourself and your career highlights to date?
Well it’s been quite a year 2013, another successful tour with Brian May, my own one woman show at the London Palladium, headlining the RENT in concert tour and much more, even became a mum.

Tell me about this production of Rent, the role you play and the story for those who may not know.
This is a concert version of the show , though you do get a lot more , we have a set, costumes a great band and a fabulous cast.

My character is Mimi, a troubled (though carefree) girl who falls for her new neighbour Roger while struggling to deal with her addiction. The show is a story of relationships and social issues, but mainly great songs!

If we asked your friends to describe you in three words, what would they be?

Loyal , smiley and Stubborn.

Do you have a particular favourite moment, song or line from Rent?
There are a few but I love Collins’ song Santa Fe , and I love doing La vie Boheme when the whole cast is together.

You have a new album coming out this year. Can you give anything away about songs will be on it or how it might different from your first album?
Well I’m still working with Brian on another album but I am also looking to record the show I did at the palladium with  ‘pledge’ which is a new way of bringing together artists and fans. I’m also going tour with the palladium show in October. Details are all on

How has becoming a mother changed your approach to your work? Do you feel yourself wanting to do anything differently these days because of it?
It hasn’t really changed anything as such , I’m still determined, love what I do and still a career girl, I just have a few less hours sleep !!

Who is your biggest musical theatre inspiration (apart from me)
I’ve always loved Elaine Paige, I love how she has continued to grow with her career and keeps taking on new challenges. I hope I can do the same. Michael Ball is another one who just doesn’t stop.
