Pussy – Laughing Horse @ The Counting House

press_3850_img_003The advertising of this late night Edinburgh show is intriguing. “5 girls, 1 stage, It’s not about Cats” is all the information it gives away. What are you supposed to take from that? Well I went along expecting some foul mouthed comedy from women talking about their body parts in a Vagina Monologues style show. That is not what happened.

Pussy has left me pretty stumped as to what I saw. The audience laughed (although at midnight after a long day of seeing shows watching something like this is a case of laugh or cry) but I just didn’t get it. 5 girls took to the stage, dressed in body stockings and did a variety of interpretative type dance routines whilst smearing make up all around their faces and acting like crazed zombies making animal noises.

I can understand that this was a feminist show, exploring how women are perceived and how society expects them to be. Sadly it was nothing like the show I was expecting to see and had very little to offer in the way of artistic merit. In a recent article for TWSSMagazine.com the girls said:

“This show hopes to make people realise that the stereotypes imposed on women are ridiculous, and give us something to laugh at.”

Sadly I think people may be laughing at this show for the wrong reasons. Pussy is definitely not about cats but it’s not about much else either.
