Alright Bitches! is a gay comedy play written by Martin Blackburn, currently playing at Above The Stag Theatre in Vauxhall (the UK’s only full time LGBT theatre). The premise is easy going and fun. Two groups of people, sharing an apartment complex in Grand Canaria for a week of sun, sea and shenanigans including gay bingo and a nightly romp at the local gay bar ‘Toolbox’. Ollie and Jason are celebrating their one year anniversary and for once, Ollie has been allowed to decide on the holiday destination. Grand Canaria isn’t quite on the same level as the types of places Jason would usually choose but he is going along with it (although somewhat begrudgingly). Friends Max and Garth have come for a boys week away with their trusty fag hag Pam in toe to see how many straight men she can get under her belt in a gay town. This girl isn’t afraid of a challenge. As they days go on, the sun starts to get to them and hands start to wander. So at the end of the week who will be going home with who? Will it be a happy ending or will it be the last trip away these groups ever make together?

The cast of five are strong and work well together as a group with some familiar faces from previous Above The Stag productions. Grant Cartwright (Ollie) was last seen in the Christmas panto ‘Tinderella’ playing Cinders and Lucas Livesey (Max) who has been an Above The Stag regular in past shows ‘The Gay Naked Play’, ‘You Should Be So Lucky’ and ‘Treasure Island’. I couldn’t quite warm to Anton Tweedale who played Jason, the upmarket snob who has reluctantly agrees to go to Grand Canaria with his boyfriend Ollie. I’m not sure if it was the character I disliked or the acting but something didn’t quite feel right. Ethan Chapples amused as bed hopping Garth and provided most of the comedy in the show and Hannah Vesty was great as fag-hag Pam.

If you want to beat the January blues with a bit of light hearted fun then Alright Bitches! is the perfect tonic. It isn’t Chekov but it’s a good night out and if you haven’t been to the little gem of a theatre that is Above The Stag then get yourself down there as it’s a lovely, friendly venue.
