REVIEW: JINKX SINGS EVERYTHING (Soho Theatre) ★★★★
Born and raised in Seattle Jinkx Monsoon has been working on the stage since the age of 15. Stardom beckoned with the winning of season five of ‘RuPauls Drag Race’ and Jinkx now works internationally with this and their other show ‘The Vaudevillians’. Jinkx describes themselves as being Seattle’s ‘hottest, youngest MILF’, and as ‘the hardest working single mother in show business’.
‘Jinkx Sings everything’ is an utter joy of a show. From the moment they arrived on stage Jinks had the audience eating out of the palm of their hand with a sassy blend of musical theatre, comedy and improvisation.
At the start Jinkx explains the rules, ‘I am flying by the seat of my pants’ and the show is shaped by the audience, Jinkx sings what they want to hear, but can’t possibly know ‘EVERYTHING’ so won’t sing it if they don’t know it or, ‘just can’t be bothered….’!
What follows is a hilarious cocktail of audience interaction, witty repartee and tenacious musical theatre numbers, including a brilliantly funny rendition of Les Miserables ‘One Day More’. Although not always note perfect, I don’t think I’d be lying if I said there was a touch of the ‘Mermans’ in Jinkx’s voice.
The show may be improvised, but it has been very obviously well worked and is nothing but professional. This highly entertaining evening is on at the Leicester Square Theatre until Saturday 28th October 2017.
