The Boys Upstairs is a hilarious comedy play which has just opened at Above The Stag Theatre in Vauxhall, where it is having its UK premiere.

imageSex, Dating, Friendship, and all the blurry lines in between…The Boys Upstairs invites you into the fabulous living room of Josh, Seth, and Ashley. These three New York boys encounter all of the challenges, thrills and  disappointments life has to offer.

Hugh O’Donnell is the star of the show (which has an incredibly strong cast), playing multiple characters with multiple accents and multiple wigs! I think he played the boyfriend of every character in the show at some point! His monologue in Act 2 was one of the stagiest things I have ever seen happen in a show. The lengthy speech was nothing but musical theatre references and lines from songsimage. I don’t think I have ever laughed so much in the theatre. It was pure brilliance and worth the ticket price alone! Joe Leather was camptactic and fun as Ashley and Daniel Garcia was rather pleasing to the eye as Eric, showing an impressive set of muscles that would make any woman (or man) giddy.

The set design by Zoe Hurwitz was brilliant. Camp, colourful and tasteful, everything you would expect to imagesee from a group of New York gays living together.

The only downfall of this show is its story, or lack there of. Nothing significant really happens and its a bit like watching a reality tv show. However, as an extremely well written comedy, the lack of story didn’t seem to matter. A story wasn’t needed but could however have been a nice touch!

Comedy, fun and a brilliant musical theatre monologue makes The Boys Upstairs an unmissable show. So get yourself down to Vauxhall and check it out!
