Last night it was announced that later this month, original cast members of the London production of Kinky Boots, Matt Henry and Killian Donnelly, will return to the West End show for three performance that will be filmed for a future worldwide screening.
But whilst the majority of Kinky Boots fans are excitedly scurrying around to buy tickets to these special shows, some theatre fans have been asking what this means for the current cast members playing the roles, Simon Anthony Rhoden and Oliver Tompsett. Have they just been shunned and asked to step aside for the filming and why couldn’t they have performed as usual for this special filming?
Already a kick in the teeth to hear that the show is due to close on 12 January 2019, the two lead cast members have now seemingly been pushed aside from the show, whilst the original cast members return. Whether or not this was always planned is unknown but as we already have the Original London Cast Recording of the show available, it might have been nice to see the current cast members have the opportunity to show how they put their spin on the characters in this filmed production.
Either way, it is exciting news that there will be a filmed version of the London show made before the show closes in the West End. It just seems a little odd to invite back original cast members who have not played the roles for well over a year, when the current cast members could do just as good a job.
