This week it was announced that RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bianca Del Rio will be joining the cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie in London’s West End to play drag queen Loco Chanelle after Shane Richie leaves the show in May.
But this video has been brought to my attention by one concerned theatre fan who thinks Bianca Del Rio may have gone one step too far last year’s at Montreal Pride where she said of contestant Blair St Clair “then you’ve got that other bitch ‘I was raped'” to which the audience sound shocked to hear those words. She continued “no, fuck you, you noticed she wasn’t raped until she was in the bottom two? Think about that bitch, that’s fucking strategy.”
The crowd at Montreal Pride can be heard booing but Del Rio continues “fuck you, rape is funny if you haven’t had it, and if you weren’t raped remember this, you’re ugly. Oh we’re supposed to have sympathy? Fuck you, it is what it is faggots.”
Bianca Del Rio posted on Instagram after saying “‘Look, my point was everyone was crying on the last season of Drag Race to win over the judges and “save yourself from elimination”. I wasn’t questioning the validity of anyone’s personal struggles, but bringing it up right before you “lip sync for your life” was strategic… in my opinion.”
Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing and in comedy people can sometimes come quite close to crossing the line. But for someone about to join a musical that displays a message of acceptance, this video is something that unfortunately raises some eyebrows.
