Bernie Dieter talks about bringing the darkest, funniest and most debauched Kabarett Club this side of Berlin to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your performing background?
I have always been a performer darling, since I was about four years old and could hold a tune. By the age of eight I was hanging out with drag queens and composing songs full of swear words. I just love to be the centre of attention and I can’t help myself!

Tell me about your show, what it is all about?
It is the darkest, funniest and most debauched Kabarett Club this side of Berlin! I sing my hilariously filthy original songs, and we have a cast of breath-taking circus acts, debauched drag queens and quirky characters that all are totally at home in the beautiful spiegeltent. It is the ultimate Kabarett show.

How long have you been working on this show and what is it that makes it relevant to audiences in 2018?
Creative Director Tom Velvick and I created the show about two years ago where it was born as a late night spiegeltent lock in, a place where all of the best acts in the world (who I am lucky enough to call my friends) could come and perform their filthiest, most outrageous material. Then it grew into the set cast, headline show that it is now. Full of ground breaking social commentary, it is at the cutting edge of modern Weimar punk Kabarett.

Do you have any top tips for surviving the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – both for performers and visitors to the event?
Drink all of the gin! It will make you forget that it is cold and probably raining.

What has been the funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?
I often ask some members of the audience to help/carry me back to the stage. There have been several times that we have fallen and landed in compromising positions (i.e. a head between my thighs). I think they expect me to jump up and carry on but I just lie there and enjoy it!

Who are your biggest inspirations in the industry and why?
Camille O’Sullivan has always been a huge inspiration to me because of her incredible passion and connection with the audience. Absolutely honoured to be taking her usual 8pm time slot in the Underbelly Spiegeltent this year.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Did I mention the gin?

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at Edinburgh Fringe?
Courtney Act as she is on in the Spiegeltent just before us, Yana Alana ‘Between the Cracks’ as she is an incredible Aussie cabaret superstar, Velma Celli (absolutely gorgeous and has an incredible voice), Johnny Woo’s Brexit Cabaret…just to name a few. The cabaret program is super strong this year.

Why do you think people should come and see your show over the thousands of others on at the Fringe?
Because it’s the one I’m in darling! And with a fully original soundtrack, a gin soaked Weimar punk jazz band and the best damn cast of miscreants around there is going to be absolutely nothing else like it.
