Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your performing background?
My name is Cal and I am a circus performer from Melbourne Australia. I started doing , community circus and diving at a young age, and got into extreme sports and eventually became a street performer. I was Melbourne’s youngest professional street performer doing busking shows at age 14. But it wasn’t all acrobatics for me, I learnt magic on the side and did magic shows for kids. So I guess I became a professional artist and businessman very young.

Tell me about your show, what it is all about?
It’s a Circus variety show! It highlights all the best circus at this years Edinburgh Fringe, with a fantastic line-up of superstars. We had amazing success with our show Elixir last year, and have decided to make a variety show this year. There are lots of Variety shows at the fringe, but this is the first one that is wholly circus. Also its rated R 18+ because there is a fair bit of naughty stuff.

How long have you been working on this show and what is it that makes it relevant to audiences in 2018?

We started this show in the Brighton fringe last year. Brighton was the perfect place to debut this show because they are always up for a debaucherously good time. It sold out for 2 years in a row there and Is making its fringe debut. Variety shows are always relevant in a festival scene because they give the public a taste of everything. Circus is at the top of everyone’s list to see at the fringe, along with comedy and we have plenty of the best of both!

Do you have any top tips for surviving the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – both for performers and visitors to the event?
Put your heart into what your doing. Enjoy the company of your friends and the beautiful vibes. Get caught up in the madness and have no regrets the next day. Drink water.

What has been the funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?
Once were sharing a venue with Barbu at the Adelaide fringe. On the closing night they decided to come on stage naked during our opening scene. They didn’t realise that the opening scene of Elixir is the same as the closing scene, so they had to come back out on stage again at the end. Somehow there went from 5 of them to like 15 and even the techs came on naked. It was hilarious.

Who are your biggest inspirations in the industry and why?
I once watched Danik Abershev on Australias Got Talent do a handstand on a ladder. The next day I went out and bought a ladder and started trying to teach myself the act. Years later I became the second Australian person to perform a handstand on a ladder. I would say this to this day that Danik is my biggest inspiration.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Lots of warmups obviously. Check in with all the acts and make sure everything is sweet, I’m the MC of the show so I have to cover if there are any problems. Also I curl my moustache.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at Edinburgh Fringe?
Shift By Kin, Casus “you and I”, spash test dummies, Reuban Kaye

Why do you think people should come and see your show over the thousands of others on at the fringe?

It’s a late night sexy variety circus show. Nothing but the absolute best circus acts, with a splash of dirty humour and some full frontal nudity 😉
