Steve (Mr. Thing) talks about bringing his late night party chat show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your performing background?
I’m a puppet and my name is Steve. I am covered in purple fluff and what one by definition would call a monster. I believe I am the only one of my kind, but then to be fair I have never really looked. No thats a lie, I did start trying to look once, got as far as my kitchen and then found some jam. After that the search for my family, my history and my origin just seemed inconsequential when put next to a nice pot of strawberry Jam. Do you have any jam? No?…Well can you at least look?

Tell me about your show, what it is all about?
Mr. Thing is a late night, chaotic comedy chat show Thing. It’s a world of full special guests, live music, interviews, videos, sketches, and games. Hosted by two delightfully funny boys, supported by a live house band and then stealing the show, Me, Puppet Steve, running the bar. Thats right, your human ears heard correctly, A giant purple monster will be running the Mr. Thing bar live every night. I know, I know the anticipation is building inside you like a mini vesuvius, ready to erupt your excitement lava all over the place.

How long have you been working on this show and what is it that makes it relevant to audiences in 2018?
This show is a chat show that brings together interesting and creative people to talk about and show off their things. It began as the brain tadpole of Tom Clarkson and has been developing for over 2 years now as a bi-monthly chat show in Fringe venues around London, every two months getting bigger and stronger and gathering more and more of a following until now.. Boom, it’s become this whopping Thing frog that is leaping its way up to the Pleasance in Edinburgh.

The show is live and new with different guests every night, so it couldn’t be more relevant and current to 2018 audiences as its actually happening, for the first time ever, right in front of you, then thats it, that show will never be seen again, you’ll need to come back the next night and see a brand new one. Just as good, if not better! I think we are giving out loyalty cards, see 3 shows get a free shoe. And who doesn’t want a free shoe?

Do you have any top tips for surviving the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – both for performers and visitors to the event?
Wear Sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, Sunscreen would be it.

What has been the funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?
I once appeared on stage and realised I was absolutely naked! Can you imagine it? I completely forget to dress! I was just one big bare arm for all the world to see! That was incredibly embarrassing… But also very liberating.

Who are your biggest inspirations in the industry and why?
I would have to say Alan MacMasters. The inventor of the toaster. He revolutionised the whole industry with that one, it was a real game changer. Think how long it used to take to make a piece of toast or a nice crumpet. Truly a master of his work. He was actually a Scotsman you know. Every morning when I watch that Edinburgh sunrise and sink my fangs into a toasted teacake I’ll give a silent salute too Mr MacMasters. A legend amongst men.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
I lead the whole company in a run up to Arthurs Seat and back down again ready for show time. I also lie in interviews.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at Edinburgh Fringe?
We’re very happy to hear our friends Gamarjobat are back this year and our show is on after the incredible Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho who has joined us on Mr. Thing before (and we hope will again!). Other than that the Mr. Thing team will be out every day searching for the best acts this year to bring to their show each night, so I’ll be able to give you a full list by week three.

Why do you think people should come and see your show over the thousands of others on at the Fringe?
Don’t be foolish and only come and see our show over the thousands of others at the fringe, thats just bad time management!
But after a day of seeing some incredible shows come and join us for the late night party chat show with Special Guests, Games, Prizes, Music, Comedy Sketches, Fringe highlights, a live house band and me puppet Steve, just a regular old fluffy purple monster running the bar…Remember the show is different overnight, see it three times get a free shoe.*

* there is no shoe.
