Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your performing background?
I’m the Director of all-female Australian Circus crew YUCK Circus. Growing up in the isolated coastal town of Broome, there wasn’t much to do as a kid apart from join the local circus! I began training at Theatre Kimberley’s Sandfly Circus at the age of 11, and haven’t stopped since. With a powerhouse cast by my side, I’m on my first International tour as a Lady Boss and we’re bloody stoked to be here.

Tell me about your new show, what it is all about?
Let’s get into the grit of it: we’re coming for your bloody ‘female standards’ and rough Aussie norms. Our award-winning Western Australian company of circus chicks are tackling the uncomfortable through dance, circus, and beaut comedic timing. It’s bingeing on a jar of Nutella, it’s the thwack of the tampon, and it’s all contemporary Australian poetry. YUCK is fun for the faint hearted, the strong-willed, and the everyday battler.

How long have you been working on this show and what is it that makes it relevant to audiences in 2019?
YUCK was chosen as the winner of 2018 Gaswork’s Circus Showdown for its outstanding comedic social commentary. We’re talking menstruation, addressing toxic masculinity, trying our worst pick-up lines, and celebrating our Australian pride. As an all-female cast, with an all-female brain-trust, were providing a humour that you wouldn’t expect. We’ve just smashed our debut season in January with the Australian Summer, and now have our sights set on UK shores.

Do you have any top tips for surviving the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – both for performers and visitors to the event?
Your guess is as good as mine! This will be the first time we ever go to Scotland, let alone the beauty of Edinburgh Fringe. My biggest tip is to check out what’s going on down at the Circus Hub – there’s STACKS of amazing performers gracing the Meadows. Get on it!

What has been the funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?
One of my favourite things about my show is that I genuinely laugh every single night at something that happens onstage. When the jokes keep getting you 20 shows in, or when something improvised and ridiculous comes out nowhere; pure joy. A choice part for me is the absolute tension between Ella and the Audience before she rings her small wooden musical frog. No one knows what is about to come out of her mouth, honestly, it’s even a surprise for me sometimes

Who are your biggest inspirations in the industry and why?
As a director and a circus community member, I’m more inspired by leading ladies in our field. A legion of amazing, comedic, strong women has paved the way of our industry long before YUCK time, and still this content has incredible affluence on commercial stages. I’d like to link my success and career to what I consider Circus Mummas; the nurturing figurehead that often is in the role of community circus founder, prominent trainer, or guiding friend for upcoming artists.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Totally! Us YUCK Girls stand in a circle and recount all the amazing compliments we’d gotten from our audience since our last show. Then, like any bunch of ladies sporting enormous buldges and moustaches, we go around and bump our fake bits for good luck.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at Edinburgh Fringe?
We’re so overwhelmed with the amount of shows playing throughout the month of August, we don’t even know where to start! I’m excited to see all our other Aussies and Kiwi’s rocking the Northern Hemisphere alongside us. Too many to even list!

Why do you think people should come and see your show over the thousands of others on at the Fringe?
We’re a 7-strong crew of elite Aussie acrobatic gals, ready flip off double-standards and kick art in the face. We’re not lightly throwing around women’s issues – we’re literally throwing women.
