Jasmyn Banks, star of the UK Tour of Caroline’s Kitchen sat down with us to tell us all about the show and what people can expect if they go along.
Jasmyn’s theatre credits include includes The Wind in the Willows (Royal Shakespeare Company) and One Man Two Guv’nors (National Theatre/UK Tour). On television, she played Alice Branning for two years in EastEnders and most recently appeared in A Very English Scandal.
Can you tell me about the show?
This is a dark comedy that takes place in Caroline’s Kitchen. A famous TV chef, a mother and wife who tries to keep it all together while her life begins to fall apart around her.
What part do you play in the show and where does it fit in to the story?
I play Amanda, Caroline’s PA. Amanda is a lonely soul with a drug habit and a strong disdain for Caroline’s pretence of perfection.
What’s your favourite part of the whole show and why?
I think my favourite has to be the ending of the show which of course you would have to see to know why but it is an awful lot of fun to play!
What has been a highlight of your career so far?
I think being in a show that has been written to be so excellently observed which we are taking to New York is a massive highlight for me!
Playing this extraordinary character has been a challenge and real privilege. She is a kind, compassionate, brave woman not to mention she’s a total fashion icon!
Who are your biggest inspirations inside and outside of the industry?
Inside the industry I have to say all actors inspire me for having the courage to go and get the job, do the job and having the staying power to just keep going. Outside of the industry it’s got to be my mum.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Many! My fave being my dance whilst I brush my teeth to get me in the mood!
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
Staying alive Bee Gees
What’s so special about this production and why should audiences come to see it?
It is hilarious, thought provoking, devastating and unsettlingly well observed. The trials and tribulations of these recognisable characters will leave you aghast in an alarmingly warm hearted way.
