You have performed in some amazing shows so far in your career. What have been some of your highlights?
Highlights, playing Jolene in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Was just crazy mad fun… And I didn’t take a second of that for granted. I was so privileged. To play that venue with that that cast. Another highlight was the first time we all had to bare all in the rehearsal room at Mrs Henderson Presents. How scared and vulnerable we all felt and how brave we all were to be naked on stage. Very proud to have done it.
You are about to star in the European Premiere of VANITIES the Musical at Trafalgar Studios. What is the show about and what attracted you to the part you are playing?
I liked the songs and I liked the play. I love that it’s all about women. So nice to be able to work closely with some really strong, clever women. Where the story is all about them, and they aren’t side-lined for their male counterparts.
Who are your biggest inspirations in the theatre industry and why?
Sutton Foster really has it. She sings, dances, acts, feels and lives it. She has funny bones but she can make you weep. What more could you ask for in a performer. In this country Katherine Kingsley and Ian Batholomew are pretty special they have been amazing to watch close up in rehearsals too.
If I asked your friends to describe you in three words, what would they be?
I think they would say I am clumsy, loving, loyal weirdo.
What has been the funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?
Too many, I have fallen over a number of times knickers out (at least it wasn’t in Mrs Henderson’s and I was clothed at the time)….I came on to begin a song and realised I didn’t know any of the words. I blar blar blar’d the first verse before in character asking to start again. Everyone was wetting themselves. I have also lost my voice on stage and decided to speak sing/rap my song.
What are your thoughts on theatre etiquette? What things annoy you when you are performing or when you are in the audience?
I was once watching Wicked and the person behind me was singing along with Defying Gravity… Let’s just leave it to Elphaba…
Apart from acting, what is your biggest vice?
I really enjoy writing comedy sketches, drinking red wine and eating apple crumble, in freshly washed pjs with brand new socks.
We are living in a time where films are often being turned into stage plays and musicals. If you had
to choose one, what film would you like to see adapted to the stage?
Heart breakers. It would be so good. It’s about a mother and daughter as well. Proper girl power nineties… Sexy silly fun.
If you could be the opposite sex for the day, what theatre role would you love to have a go at playing?
Frank N. Furter in Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors.
If you won the lottery and could stage one theatre show of your choice, what would you choose and who would be your dream cast?
Probably get Tim Minchin to work with Ricky Gervais to write something with lots of parts for women over 35 to showcase all of the fantastic female actresses in this country!
Why do you think people should come and see Vanities at Trafalgar Studios?
You’ve got to see it! If only to see Ashleigh Gray melt your heart and Lauren Samuels make your draw drop to the floor! I am thrilled to be able to watch and work with them! Come see ?
Thanks for having Tea With Wilma
