Mamma Mia’s ‘Tanya’ Mazz Murray has Tea With Wilma

TWW Mazz Murray

You are just entering your second year playing Tanya in MAMMA MIA!. For anyone who may not be aware of the show, can you tell me what it is about and the character you play?
It’s about a group of three women, who when they were in a band years ago, slept with lots of men and now there’s a child and a taverna. Whilst writing this down I’ve realised this story has worrying similarities. I play one of the women. We are similar, although I would never stay in that taverna.

I’ve met many actresses who’ve played Tanya over the years and they always seem to have some hilarious stories about hairdryers flying out into the audience and other disasters on stage. Have you had any funny/awful moments during your time so far in the show?
My dress split floor to naval in the bedroom scene. I secured it with a scarf I found on the set and finished the song without moving. I also smashed the one bottle and spent the whole scene on my hands and knees clearing it up.

Tanya is such a loveable character and one that I’ve always related to over the years! What is your favourite part about her and is she the kind of character you would usually like to play?
Yes, she is great fun and I would be friends with her for sure. Especially the Tanya this year. She is extra special!

MAMMA MIA! is a musical with all the hits of Abba from over the years. Were you always an Abba fan or has this been something new for you and what song is most special to you?
Always an ABBA fan, yes. I used to go into my Mum’s garden with my cassette Walkman and sit on the swing playing my ABBA Album. My husband and I seven years ago had “Chiquitita” as our wedding song. What are the chances!

There are lots of exciting shows coming to London in 2016. Is there anything you are particularly looking forward to seeing?
“42nd Street” My dream show and one of my dream roles.

You have played a lot of great roles over the years so far. Do you have any dream roles that you would like to play over the years to come?
Dorothy Brock
Fraulien Koste
Madame Thénardier
And Aladdin, obvs

If you could be the opposite sex for the day, what theatre role would you love to have a go at playing?
The Phantom

Why do you think people should come to see MAMMA MIA! at the Novello Theatre?
…Because it’s not on at the Prince Of Wales anymore.
