Winners announced for the Theatre & Technology Awards 2018

The Theatre and Technology Awards were set up in 2017 by Theatrefullstop’s founder and editor, Lucy Basaba, to discern and honour the technicians, designers and producer who bring theatre to life. Celebrating these unsung heroes, the event this year, was hosted at the Soho Curzon Cinema and the evening kicked off with a screening of last year’s Outstanding Production winner, Digitopia by Tom Dale Dance Company and Moko Dance.

The categories included Best Innovation in Sound, Lighting, Video Projection as well as Best Production Photography, Poster Design and Marketing Campaign. Actor Jospeh Adelakun hosted the evening and exhibited sincere respect for the nominees, highly commending Basaba for her hard work towards the event. Each winner was selected by public vote and the final decision made by a professional judge including award winning independent video and projection designer Nina Dunn, stage lighting designer Eliza Alexandropoulou and graphic designer, Inua Ellams. The winners were:

Creative Innovation in Sound: George Dennis for An Octoroon at National Theatre
Creative Innovation in Lighting: Joshua Pharo for The Claim at Shoreditch Town Hall
Creative Innovation in Video Projection: Joshua Pharo for The Shape of Pain at Battersea Arts Centre
Best Marketing Campaign: Bush Theatre for Leave Taking
Best Online Publication: OnStage Blog
Best Podcast: The Show People Podcast
Best Production Photography: Johan Persson
Best Poster Design: National Theatre Design Studio for Nine Night
Best Online/Live Streaming Platform: National Theatre Live
Best Trailer: Arcola Theatre for Spun
Outstanding Production: Manuel Cinema for Lula Del Ray

In the transient theatre industry, opportunity is low and recognition of contribution ever lower. A night like this one is something to be respected and conserved. Long may it fruitfully continue.
