REVIEW: BRIEFS FACTORY PRESENTS: SWEATSHOP (Underbelly Circus Hub) ★★★

SS_1000x640_750_500_60_c1The people behind the hit circus/cabaret show BRIEFS bring their latest show SWEATSHOP to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, hosted by half of one of my favourite comedy cabaret duos Frisky and Mannish, Miss Frisky.

The late night show at the Underbelly’s Circus Hub includes cabaret, circus and party tricks, woven together by Miss Frisky’s comedy, performances and costumes. The show is a variety act featuring cast members from Briefs, Circus group Circa and even stand up comedians. It’s a bit of a mish-mash of different shows and styles with high energy performances.

Being a fan of the Briefs Factory’s work in the past, I was excited to see this new show but I couldn’t quite work out what the act was aiming to achieve. It felt more like one of those late night Edinburgh shows where several of the acts performing at the fringe get given a ten minute slot to perform their act, rather than a polished act of its own.

If you’re at a loose end and looking for a late night show then the Underbelly’s Circus Hub is a great, intimate venue where you can see the action up close whilst you enjoy a drink or two. Perhaps my expectations were a little too high given the company’s previous work but this is an interesting concept that with some fine tuning could be a very good night out.
