REVIEW: DREAMGIRLS ORIGINAL LONDON CAST RECORDING

Dreamgirls Original London Cast Recording Review

And I am telling you that tomorrow (Friday 12 May 2017), the Original London Cast Recording of the musical Dreamgirls is released and you’d better all be goin’ downtown in your cadillac car to get a copy to listen to!

Recorded live at London’s Savoy Theatre over four performances, backed by a 14 piece band, this recording gives you the opportunity to hear Glee star Amber Riley sing classic songs like And Im Telling You I’m Not Going, Listen and One Night Only along with the rest of the talented London cast.

The CD sounds great and really gives you the feeling that you are there, listening to the show live from your living room. The final four songs of Act 1 are the best part of the show and the recording for me. It starts with a ‘Press Conference’ that the group hold, which then leads to their heated discussion in ‘Heavy’, ‘It’s All Over’ and the climax of ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’. It is easy to understand why the show has been getting multiple standing ovations at every performance.

Although Amber Riley gets most of the praise for this show, the whole cast are very talented. The other ‘Dreams’ Liisi LaFontaine and Ibinabo Jack give stellar performances and Joe Aaron Reid (Curtis Taylor Jr), Tyrone Huntley (C.C. White) and Adam J. Bernard (Jimmy Early) are all equally amazing.

Dreamgirls is a brilliant show and the live recording, released tomorrow, is a great way to experience the show for yourself if you can’t get to London to see it or as a reminder of just what a special show it is if you already have.

Dreamgirls is currently booking at the Savoy Theatre until 21 October 2017. Book tickets
