Le Gateau Chocolat brings his show celebrating the music of his icons to the Piccolo Tent in George Square. His chatty style suits the space well, surrounded by the audience on three sides with two aisles for walking among the crowd.
Gateau’s voice is the star of this show, from eighties ballads with a fan and smoke machine to quieter moments of reflection on lost friends via the operatic style suited to his rich baritone voice. Each performance comes with a fabulous outfit and some quick changes.
In this hour we learn something of what has made Gateau what we see today. Even when singing familiar songs, he has the ability to make them his own, to tell his story, and make us hear every word as if for the first time. In spite of the sad moments, the show ends on a high with the audience joining in and sent out into the Edinburgh evening with a wide grin.
