REVIEW: Hankies Café (Shaftesbury Avenue)
Located in the heart of theatre land, neighbouring the iconic home of Les Miserables on Shaftesbury Avenue is the small and relaxed Hankies Café. At just £14 for two courses or £16 for three, the Indian restaurant have created a delicious menu for a luxurious, light and laid-back pre-theatre dining experience.
Both the service and food at Hankies Café are excellent. We particularly enjoyed the flavourful ‘Chicken Soola’ starter and the tasty vegetarian ‘Pumpkin Paneer’. Both dishes are full of Indian flavours and spice but are not too spicy, just the right level to be able to enjoy your meal without needing a glass of water every five seconds.
This small-plate set-up enables for a great social sharing experience with your fellow theatre-goers. Seated on benches, you can escape from the madness of central London directly outside, as the café-like feel of the restaurant allows you to relax before a show.
Forget a noisy packet of sweets at the theatre, for a sweet treat before you arrive, the ‘Aam Gur Ke Kheer’ is fantastic. The mango, caramel and cardamom rice-pudding style dessert is light and sweet, a refreshing finish to a spicy meal of a variety of flavours.
Hankies Café have got their pre-theatre menu just right and we finished our dinner satisfyingly full. Many pre-theatre dinners often leave you feeling too stuffed and lazy to be able to sit through a two-and-a-half-hour show. Yet, the collection of Indian light-bites fills you up just enough to comfortably enjoy a performance nearby in the West End.
With wonderful service, delicious food and chilled vibes, Hankies Café on Shaftesbury Avenue is great for theatre-goers to experience an enjoyable pre-theatre dinner.
