Newsrevue is celebrating its milestone 40th anniversary this year, having held the Guinness World Record of World’s Longest Running Comedy Show since 2004, and I went to see the latest cast at the Canal Café Theatre last week.
For anyone not familiar with the format of the show, Newsrevue is an hour of musical comedy that satirises current affairs featuring a cast of 2 male and 2 female performers. The show is updated every week to reflect changes in the news and the cast, director and musical director change every six weeks. This show is dynamic AF and what a time we are living in to be part of the creative team!
Obviously, it would be impossible to put on a show like this at the moment without Brexit topping the bill and there are Brexit gags a-plenty; a particular highlight is a parody of Theresa May and Boris Johnson trying to get a supermarket meal deal; sterling. However this isn’t just a Brexit show and the songs and jokes come from all facets of current affairs from electric scooters (sung to ABBA’s Super Trouper) to the stagnation of British high streets. Throughout this fast-paced hour, the satire is sharp and the laughs are plenty.
This is a fantastic way to spend an evening… or several given that it changes so often! Newsrevue is playing at the Canal Café Theatre Thursday to Saturday at 21h30 and 21h Sundays.
