REVIEW: Tina – The Tina Turner Musical (Original London Cast Recording)

I’ve not gotten around to seeing Tina – The Tina Turner Musical in London’s West End yet, mainly because it seems to be selling very well and reasonably priced tickets are hard to come by but after hearing the Original Cast Recording (out digitally today and on CD this spring), I’m going to sell my soul to get a ticket to see the show!

Recorded in February 2019 at Angel Studios and RAK Studios, the critically acclaimed production of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical received its world premiere in April 2018 in London and subsequently has broken all box office records at the Aldwych Theatre, where it is now booking to December 2019. Adrienne Warren, who plays Tina Turner in the show in the West End, will recreate her celebrated performance on Broadway in Autumn 2019.

From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them. This new stage musical, presented in association with Tina Turner herself, reveals the untold story of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race.

Adrienne Warren is vocally outstanding on this album, sounding incredibly similar to the lady herself. With hit songs like Nutbush City Limits, Private Dancer, What’s Love Got To Do With It, River Deep Mountain High, Proud Mary and of course Simply The Best, this original cast recording is a brilliant tribute to Tina Turner’s incredible catalogue of music.
